1/2 pound of worms

Liz,

I will be getting about 1/2 pound of worms soon. I was wanting to put them in a 35 gallon tub. Do you think that too big, or will it be ok? And how many bricks of Coconut Coir should go in that size of a tub.

Thx

I would not put a 1/2 pound of worms in that large of a container at the beginning. You will be tempted to over feed in that size bin.
I would put them in a 5 gallon bucket, compost in that and when it gets completely full, dump that entire container into the 35 gallon container. It will take about 3 months to fill the 5 gallon bucket. But you should have about 1-1.5 pound of worms by then.
If you were to ask me how many worms to start a 35 gallon container, I would suggest a minimum of 3 pounds.
But for a 5 gallon bucket you will need about 1/2 brick of conconut coir. Then just keep the other 1/2 brick to use as bedding additive with each feed.
All in all, you can put the 1/2 pound in the 25 gallon container, but just be sure to only feeding them about 1/2 cup of food scraps at a time and then only feed again when all that food is gone.
