Want to build raised garden beds for your home garden?
Its not as complicated as you might think. I built a 4x4 foot bed in under 30 minutes for under $25. Here is my video on how I did built a square foot gardening bed:
No, I did not follow the exact square foot gardening model. You might ask why I put shredded paper in the bottom. The answer is two fold. First, I put it down there to deter weed growth. Second, I put it down there to help with water retention.
Now that you know how to build a simple gardening bed, its time to plant.
This concept was perfected by someone named Mel Bartholemew. His book "Square Foot Gardening" as revolutionized the way I garden. If you have not read his book, I highly recommend it:
He recommends the following MIXTURE of bedding materials for your raised bed: 1/3 vermiculite 1/3 compost 1/3 peat moss It makes for a nutrient rich, VERY light and workable soil.
Most important with raised bed gardens is the grid. DO NOT neglect the grid. Making use of every inch of the bed is important, and if you plant in rows it will defeat the purpose. (shown in the video at the top of the page)PLEASE don't neglect this step.
Did you know you can use your current flowerbeds to make a elevated garden in? Yes, you just simply implement the above techniques to make it happen! This is called
edible landscaping.
