Can I put Red Wigglers into raised beds?
Can I just put some of your Red Wigglers into my raised garden bed containers? I use the bagged soil designed for raised beds. Thank you.
Answer from BigTex Worms:
Short answer no, not as you have it.
Long answer maybe: The only way red wiggler worms will survive anywhere is if you create a hospitable environment for them.
They MUST have the right temperature, moisture and food to survive. So the contents of your raised bed would have to be like a worm bin: mostly compost. Prepackaged materials are usually NOT organic and NOT compost, most like peat moss and vermiculite but not compost. Next, they must have an ongoing food source. SO, if you do have compost in your raised bed, then next you must use an area of the bed to feed the worms, by buring the produce scraps in there. Lastly, you must keep the bed very moist, just like a worm bin: 80% moisture, pretty wet.
All in all, I do not suggest adding worms to a raised bed. My theory is that if you have great compost in the bed, native worms will visit from time to time and leave their castings behind as fertilizer. Or you can use compost tea to fertilize your bed. But in most cases I feel adding worms to a raised bed is simply a waste of money unless you are going to treat it like a worm bin.
Hope this Helps,
Liz
