Change bins?

by Daisy
(Upstate New York)

Hi Liz!

I am very grateful for your comment on my blog. I am reading and absorbing EVERYTHING on your website. I wish I had found it before starting my worm bin. I did a bunch of research online, and I followed the directions I found, but it is evident that the methods I found are not ideal.

My question to you is this: My worms have been in their bin for only two days. The bin is completely see-through. Would you recommend transferring them to a dark bin at this point? Or should I cover them and switch them at the first soil harvest? They are kept inside in a dark cabinet, so they are in the dark the majority of the time. I admit I check on them a few times a day, because I am fascinated by them. I certainly overfed them also. I will wait until I see a significant reduction in the food before giving them more. Would it make sense to add peat or coco-whatever it is at this point? Or should I leave them be til next time? I realize the shipping and new home has stressed them, so I don't want to upset them again.

Your advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi Daisy,
There is all kinds of bad info on the web about worm composting. I killed 3 batches of worms before figuring out the tricks.
If it was me, I would do several things:
1. Add at least a gallon of cococoir or peat to the bottom of the bin.
2. Not add any food until all food is gone AND if it starts to stink, remove food.
3. Resist the urge to mess with them. I know this is a hard one, they are so cool
4. Take my online course to learn all my tips on keeping them alive.
How about this? I just yesterday launched my new online course. Nothing fancy but it has everything you need to know to get started. How about I offer it to you for free, if you mention it in your blog? If you are interested, email me through my contact form with your email address and I will send you the link/password.
I do not have a button, that would be cool, sorry.
We could do something like have a question/answer session on your blog with a link to my site at the bottom or something???
Liz
