Got my little wigglers today ! Have this grub in my tumbler. What is it, please ?

by Kirk
(Arlington, TX)

Hello Liz,

My new pets arrived today, one of my dogs was jealous and inquisitive, the other didn't care.

Made my bin before watching the course. Didn't find any coir so I got peat moss. Watched the course (go to pet store, reptile section)and now have coir and lots of peat moss.Put most of the peat in my compost, some in the bin.
The bedding in the starter bag was much wetter than what I had waiting. (err on the side of dry)

I got a sprouted pumpkin seed, at least 2 fruit flies and some little beetles in my starter. I'm using an interior closet until it gets warm so hopefully the other little beasties won't get too bad, while the little wigglers flourish. I really wanted to dig around with my new little buddies but just poked around long enough to find an egg sac.

Back to the question.

My little piece of heaven is only about 30' x 40'.
I have two compost tumblers, one has a bunch of those grubs.

I have decided to do some extreme composting. I'm collecting bagged leaves, mulching them through my wood chipper and intend to cover the plot with 6 to 8 inches of leaf mould.

Are these grubs wormivores ?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Kirk

Note from BigTex Worms:
Other bugs are a NORMAL part of the bin ecosystem.
Did you watch the "are you ready" video I sent yesterday? If so, it tells you to just dump the contents of your bag into your bin, no other bedding is necessary.

Most bugs are not predators to the red wiggler, even ants are fine. If your bin is going to be outside, the predators you must watch for are birds and moles, so make sure your bin is completely covered on all sides including top and bottom.

Liz
