(BigTex Worms)
One of the biggest mistakes of new worm farmers?
Messing with the worms to much.
Quite often I receive an email like this:
"My worms are not eating and I found a few on the lid this morning, what is wrong" Upon questioning, I hear something like this:
" on the first day, I shined a light for 12 hours. The next day I gave them 1/2 cup of XYZ food, on the 3rd day they had not eaten any of it but when I dug into the bin, the worms were moving around, on the 4th day, again they were not eating much so I decided to change the food. Today (day 5) I moved them to the garage"
WHOA NELLY! I am stressed out reading these kinds of stories. Worms like to be left alone to do their business. In other words, Feed them, and walk away for DAYS. Do not look at the bin 10x a day, do not mix up the bin, do not change the food and do not move your bin all the time. The first time you should even look at the worms is on day 14 when you turn the bedding.
I know it is a huge temptation but everytime you stress the worms it puts everything at a halt.
Worms are not good pets. But they are good workers if you leave them alone to do their DIRTY work.
