Q: Are there going to be bugs in my bin? A: Anywhere there is decomposing fruits/veggies there will be fruit flies AND in an active worm bin expect other critters like: mites and other bugs, just part of a normal ecosystem. You can deter fruit flies by leaving a good 2-3 inches of newspaper shreds atop the bedding at all times AND freezing your scraps before feeding. I personally do not have fruit flies because I only feed pre composted scraps.
Q: Can I leave my bin on my porch or in my garage year round? A: Yes, as long as your bin is protected from direct sun and temperatures above 90 and below 40. A simple light next your bin during the winter will do and a fan on the bin during the summer will do. Keeping your bin moist during summer is also imperative.
Q: Can I put dog feces in my bin? A: Worm composting is cold composting and will not kill pathogens, so I do not recommend it, unless you will only be using your castings on ornamantals (no foods).
Q: What do I do with my worms when I harvest? A: Start another bin or sell them on craigslist.

If you have prepared a bin with other bedding OF ANY KIND, dump it out right now. The starter bag is all you need, if you have other bedding in your bin, your worms will not eat any food scraps for weeks and weeks and you will run the risk of worm death. I strongly urge you to start with the starter bag ONLY in your worm bin.
