Paper shreds

I got my worms today on Ground Hog's Day. I am so excited! I start feeding on Sunday. I have a ? about paper shreds. Can any type of paper be used? Junk mail flyers (glossy paper), office papers, magazine inserts, etc.
Thanks for your help,
Debbie

Answer from BigTex Worms:
Glad they arrived safe and sound. Whew, it took 4 days, good old USPS, so much for 2-3 day delivery.
Worms can eat newspaper and office paper. They cannot digest glossy stuff, nor do you want them to digest the kind of dyes from magazines.
Remember that everything they eat will become compost, I keep this in mind when feeding them. Things I do not want to end up in my food, I dont put in my worm bins.

Success with worm bin
by: Kris, atco NJ

I purchased worms in the fall from this site which included 1200 worms with the soil and cacoons. I followed the directions and kept my worm bin in my basement. Things happened slowly at first but the worms ate everything I gave them within the week. I was not seeing too many babies and the growth of the bin was going slow. As you may already know the bins do not put off an odor, so I moved my bin from the basement to a room upstairs where it was much warmer. With in two weeks I could see an explosion of baby worms. The worms just needed a warmer room to encourage hatching of cacoons brining them from the upper 60's to 70-72 degrees. I also started with a 19 gallon plastice container and a smaller contain by about half the size, I believe was the recommendation. So it took more time but I have a lot of worms in my 19 gallon plastic container and it is now the middle of winter about 3.5 months later and I am ready to harvest and start a new bin. This was my first try with worms bought on line and it was easy and successful with following the directions in this site. Before this trial, I had started a worm bin from worms in my backyard and they are not the right type of worms for composting; very little reproduction from these type of worms and they mostly like to eat foilage. Family thinks I am crazy because I get so excited over the success of the bin, but it makes me feel good to recycle my waste and know I will not have to use fertalizers to feed my garden. Wow! Who would'nt be excited to have some control over what goes into their kid's food. Love my worms! Thanks BigTex worms for getting me started.

Feeding new worms
by: Anonymous

Thanks for your reply. I got my worms, put them in the bin with a light and had to leave town. I had someone turn off the light and put on the lid. I left shredded paper that includes glossy ads from newspaper with instructions for my daughter to make a nest, feed a handful, and cover with shreds. Will my worms be ok to just keep hanging out until I can get home on Mon with better paper shreds?
Thanks,
Debbie
I already love my worms like a doting mom!
