Starting a Square foot Garden was one of the best gardening decisions I ever made. That and starting a worm compost bin. Why?For me the biggest benefit is reduced weeding! Yippee, less work for momma.
The concept is simple. You build or buy a square frame. (I made mine out of re-purposed lumber I found in a construction site dumpster) You fill the frame with a mixture of starter bedding. (I use 1/3 aged manure, 1/3
coconut fiber
and 1/3
worm castings.
The originator of SFGardening recommends 1/3 vermiculite, 1/3 peat moss and 1/3 manure. I prefer a more organic/renewable mixture. But the above mixture will leave you a very loose material that is easy to work with, which is a huge bonus. The benefit of replacing
coconut fiber
for the peat moss is that the coconut fiber or cococoir is hydroponic (holds/stores water) which means less watering. In Texas gardening this is HUGE.
As you can see from this video my plants do well.

Worm Composting is a super fun and easy way to compost your own kitchen scraps. Its odor free and the worms do all the composting work for you. All you have to do is feed them and provide them with bedding materials. I offer a FREE online worm composting class with any purchase of composting worms.
Worm Composting and gardening go hand in hand.
I always make my daughters there very own raised beds. That way they can choose what they want to grow and it is super easy for them to maintain themselves. It is a great way to introduce them to gardening.
