Temperature scare! Are our worms ok???

Our worm bin is up to 92 degrees! and all the red wrigglers have seemed to move to the sides of the bin! Are they in danger due to heat exhaustion??? Its about a 4x8 foot plastic bin. We feed our worms once a week, a bucket load of food scraps and coffe/ tea grindings. The bin is also watered almost daily, and consistently kept moist.

Answer from BigTex Worms

Overheating a bin can cause worm death. Very simple remedy for your problem. Don't feed so much so infrequently. If you are going to feed food scraps, it is better to feed smaller amounts more often, than large amounts less often.
Food heats when it decomposes, that is where your heat is coming from.

You did not say how many pounds of worms you have but if you are feeding a "bucket load" assuming a 5 gallon bucket, then you would need at least 10 pounds of worms to justify that volume of a feeding. Do you have that many worms? If not, back WAY off your feedings.

I recommend you take my online worm composting class if you have not done so already.
