why are ants taking over my compost pile
Have compost worms in my compost pile put them in it about a month ago...since then we have had rain and colder temps around 40 I no longer see worms... I have 3 sections in my compost bin... 1 a section that I got ready for the worms then a newer section that I add to ,then there is the section of compost I use to plant with...Do you think I have lost the worms?
Answer from BigTex Worms:
You did not say what kind of worms you added. Also, I will need a detailed description of how you "got it ready for worms". How much and type of bedding, type and amount of food AND information on the bin: does it have a lid and is it completely enclosed?
If you "add" worms to an outdoor compost pile you must treat it like a worm bin not a compost pile, so all the rules of a worm bin apply: fully enclosed to protect from predators/elements, proper bedding, proper food, proper moisture level. So if you went wrong in any of these areas then they are likely gone but they could just be hiding in a safe spot.
I get ants from time to time in my traditional pile and have gotten them in my worm bins too, they are not harmful and I have not lost worms due to them. They are sign that the bin is too dry.
I have never added worms to my compost pile, I do however have worms in there, they have simply found there way there because I keep the conditions right.
Answer these questions and provide some pictures if you can and I will try to help you discover what is going on.
