Why is worm composting any better than just having a compost pile?
Answer from Liz at wormbincomposting.com Worm composting is not necessarily BETTER than traditional pile composting. Worm composting meets the needs of many that a traditional pile cannot. It is not space prohibitive (you can have a worm bin indoors in a container as small as a 5 gallon bucket), it is odor free (compost piles are not odor free), many cities prohibit compost piles due to smell and its likelihood of attracting varments (no restrictions on worm bins that I know of). So worm bins and compost piles are not apples to apples.
I have both traditional piles and worm bins. My traditional piles I use for bulky items and to precompost materials to feed the worms. My worms produce a fine (meaning opposite of coarse) finished product whereas the compost piles often leave coarse finished compost.
Another difference is a worm bin will give you year round compost whereas a traditional pile is weather contingent due to it needing to heat.
So, worm composting may or may not be BETTER, but it surely is my favorite way to compost.
