Worm "bugs"

by Amanda
(Indiana)

Hi,

I just set up my worm bin with a starter packet.
Much to my surprise, worms weren't the only thing that came in my package. There are larvae, bugs and other tiny worms.

Are there always these other bugs in established vermicomposting containers or do you only get bugs in a vermicomposting container where you have fed them manure or when the container has been outside or fed things from outside.

Thanks!
Answer from BigTex Worms
Yes, you will always have other bugs in a worm bin. They are just part of the normal ecosystem. It will be reduced if you do not feed manure or feed from an outside compost pile but all worm bins will have many other bugs. MITES and white pot worms will be in every bin along with occasional centepedes, springtails, roaches, spiders and more. The bugs eat too, so it is all good. Maybe yucky, but just part of the process and a sign of a healthy worm bin. Watch my video here:composting bugs
Many women are not prepared for this aspect of worm composting. Again, totally normal to have many other bugs in a bin.
