Worm composting for mushroom growth

by Tram Tran
(Plano, TX)

Hello,
I'm researching to grow Agaricus blazei to help me self-treat my illness. I need to grow these mushrooms on compost consisting of cow manure. I can't stack the pile enough to compost properly. I think that these little wigglers can do the job in smaller/shorter turnarounds. Please check out this link to understand what is needed in composting for mushroom cultivation and tell me what you think. Thank you for your help!

Mushroom Compost (clarification) NEW
by: Anonymous

Thank you for the information about the worm using up the nitrogen. It saved me time and effort discovering this myself. This part of the composting was unclear to me before your input. I'm confused about this, however. One of the listed mixes for growing agaricus blazei included WORM CASTINGS. Do I not get this when I compost with worms?

These shrooms need compost that's "fast-composted." See Paul Stamet's 1st book, likely in yer library. This means 25-30 days at 140-160. This preserves the N for the fungii. Worms will just eat the fungii & act so slowly that too much N is lost that ought to have gone to the shrooms.

Usually one starts with horse-stall sweepings 1-2 days old. This is 95% straw & 5% manure. Wet so you can ALLLLLmost wring a droplet out. Get it hot artificially or otherwise so you get up to temps fast. Monitor & mix, usually ea 2-4 days.

These aren't the easiest shroom to start with.
Your worms will like the "spent" mushroom compost, as will your garden.
