Worm Starter Bags

Why worm starter bags and not weighed by the pound? I have found that these Bags promise a better start with a new worm bin because they contain active bedding and worm eggs. The presence of these two materials make the shipping and transition to your worm bin easier for the worms.

AND sorting worms, no matter the method, stresses the worms. These bags weigh around 5+ pounds, they consist about 1000 worms, coconut fiber, active bedding and worm eggs. This starter is a good size for a 10 gallon or 18 gallon bin and will compost the scraps of a family of 2.

All said, I feel this is the best way to make your worm bin a success. Again, after years of selling worms to new composters, this is the best method I have seen for success. Way more bang for your buck, in my opinion.

Starter Bags VS. by the Pound VIDEO series

Like my grandma used to say "the proof is in the pudding" so I decided to run my own experiment. Here is the first video of the series. I will likely do an update in February 2011.

Project Summary

Project Summary:Project was started on 11/16/2010.

Starter bucket
1/2 pound of worms PLUS 2 pounds of active bedding. Total weight of bucket was 7# 9 ounces.
Over the course of 3 months these were the totals:
Fed food - 2 pounds 12 ounces
Fed paper- 18 cups
watered with every feed

Final weight of bucket- 16#7ounces
Worms- 1 pound 4 ounces

1/2 pound bucket
1/2# worms and 1#coconut coir and 1/2 pound of goat manure.
Total weight of bucket was 5#.
Over the course of 3 months these were the totals:
Fed food - 1#
Fed paper -7cups
watered with every feed

Final weight of bucket - 10# 12 ounces
worms- 14 ounces

As you can see the starter bucket far out performed the worms by the pound bucket. Proving my theorythat starting with active worm bedding as your primary bedding instead of "NEW" bedding, will ensurethe worms will eat and breed more.

So, for $10 more dollars to buy a starter bag than buying a pound of worms, you will indeed have better results than you would even if you bought 2 pounds of worms to start a bin.

But if you are dead set on ordering worms by the pound, I will sell them that way too. But remember, it is my STRONG urging to order the starter bag for better bin success. Worms by the pound are packed with either peat moss or cococoir. It will contain no eggs/vermicompost.
